I have moved 4 times in the last twelve months. I don’t recommend it. I am now an expert in sorting, throwing, packing, moving and unpacking. I have given whole households of goods to the Salvation Army. I given away a library full of books. Until this most recent move, everything I owned fitted into my station wagon. I am an expert in living lightly and moving quickly. I still don’t recommend it. There is nothing better than being in your own space, with your own things around you. We move for different reasons - lifestyle choices, for work, to live somewhere with a lower cost of living. Most people will move 3 or 4 times over their lifetime, but young people who rent and move around a lot may move many, many times before they buy their first home. Some people move across country and need to take advantage of auto shipping. It’s not always practical or safe to drive long distances to a new home. Then there are people who need international movers to take their household to a whole new country, not just a city. Interestingly in Australia movers are called ‘removalists’. It sounds like a movie! ‘The Removalists’, starring Brad Pitt and Al Pacino. I can just see them getting out of a van in their black armani suits and sunglasses, guns in holsters, ready to ‘move’ someone. What a hoot!
